Brexit

The Question

They could be a member of your family, or a friend or acquaintance, or a work colleague. They voted in good faith for Brexit, and unless the person is an ideological zealot they will be disappointed at the outcome so far. Can we define a type for these people?

Leaning in from the Right

I decided to read around the sound bites. I thought that insights from an academic might help, so I got stuck into 'Values, Voice and Virtue', by Matthew Goodwin, who is Professor of Politics at the University of Kent.

It's fun researching the area where you live. Am slightly late with publishing July's effort, due to preparing a talk for the Camden Local Studies and Archives centre at Holborn Library. 'From Fields to Focaccia' looks at Kentish Town, an underappreciated part of North London. I've been asked to repeat the talk at Kentish Town Library in the Autumn. 

That's the nearest I've got to a commercial in writing this stuff.

The title was going to be a statement rather than a question, but as I formulated thoughts it became clear that a question was better. Answer to be revealed below. 

I have a reputation in certain quarters for being grumpy, so this seems a perfect subject for these times.

To prepare for my diatribe I have first checked the Johnson entries in 'Late Life Crisis', a series of articles I did over the pandemic up to August this year. I will reproduce some of them below. They form an aide memoire for developing my arguments. They are also a snapshot of 18 months of UK Covid world.

The Waitrose Sprout Scandal, Part 2. December's Late Life Crisis tells the story,, but the summary is that Waitrose substituted a bag of sprouts with a single sprout in an online shop, and then charged £0.01p for the sprout.
